Seriously! For once it's not about getting bladdered in a pub then into a fight or whatever but a tackle during a game!
Tackle from behind, charged with GBH and received 6 months prison.

Hard to know exactly what happened from that... was it just late, or did he set out to hurt the guy? The judge's comments read like it was the latter - that the guy has just come through him with the intent of hurting him. If that was the case then I'm glad the action has been taken and had the consequences it has.
I'm reminded of the Keane-Haaland incident - was it a tackle or an assault? I'd say the latter and Keane should have been dealt with by the law for what happened.

It sounds like he got what he deserved.
You are right about Keane, Stu. It was undoubtedly a premeditated attack on Haarland and he should have been banned for a long time, but it was never going to happen. I actually felt sorry for Shawcross last weekend. I'm not even sure it was a foul. There was certainly no premeditation. I thought it looked like a 50 50 challenge and Ramsey, poor bloke, was just unlucky. |

Listening to a report on the case on Five Live, the guy had previous for this kind of thing i.e. going into tackles to hurt people.
While it may open up a can of worms as to what the boundary is between an accidental tackle that leads to serious injury, and a player going out to injure another, it sounds like the bloke deserved to go down for that. |

Sometimes it's clear cut as in the Roy Keane case above.. and when it's on TV you've got the benefit of replays.. In parks football you only have the referee, spectators and other players as witnesses - but that's probably a lot more people than a lot of other cases judges have to deal with...

Personally I think it's a good decision (albeit without knowing the facts of the case). If nothing else it sends out the message to the thugs that are within the game that that sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.
Shawcross to me looked reckless not malicious, that's a big difference. I still think the bloke who broke Ryan Garry's nose last time round should have been charged with ABH.

They interviewed the lad injured in this on Talksport this morning, the story is quite appalling.
He had knocked the ball out about 30 seconds from the end of the game, he heard someone running up to him from behind and braced himself for a barge. Instead he got taken out breaking his leg. The aggressor saw what had he had done and ran straight from the pitch home, didnt pick up his kit or speak to anyone. The injured lad hasnt worked since, is self employed and has a wife and 2 kids at home. He gets £60 a week to live on. It happened last October. The aggressor got what he deserved and should never be allowed to play football again. |

That is bad - there is no place in sport for that sort of thing

6 months inside for this and yet people who commit robbery or steal cars get community service!
As for the loss of earnings, our league insists that all clubs have insurance that covers all of its players/members. It also has a hardship fund for anyone who is injured and suffers loss of earnings etc.....not saying that it is OK for someone who breaks their leg to have to rely on insurance or handouts, but it does work in our league. This is a Crazy World..........As for Shawcross, IMO it was never a Red Card tackle! |
