Christmas is a magical time of year; a time for giving and compassion for our fellow man. While many of us will be enjoying our annual rest with our families, this time of celebration will be a reminder for the less fortunate among us of how tough life can be.

It is a crying shame that so many families in the United Kingdom are still not capable of putting food on the table and it is a dismal thought that while others celebrate the Christmas period, they will be left to wonder where the next meal is coming from.

For this reason, and with encouragement from our supporters, we have decided to run the Bournemouth Food Bank campaign again. The last campaign we ran back in July, raised three quarters of a ton of food for families in dire straits and we hope to raise even more food this time round.

Hunger is not just a third world problem. In the UK 13 million people are living on the edge of poverty (Government indices of deprivation 2004).

When a crisis occurs such as illness, bereavement, benefit delay or redundancy, if there is no safety net of money then you may find yourself unable to feed yourself or your family.

A crisis can quickly become extremely desperate leading to house repossession, relationship breakdown or something worse.

Bournemouth Food Bank works in our locality to support people who are on the edge of disaster. The charity provides up to 3 days of emergency food for people in crisis. It was launched in December 2007 and started giving out food in January 2008.

To date it has fed over 1,400 adults and over 550 children, and the need for food is growing all the time, especially in the current recession.

This year we also be collecting tins of dog and cat food for 'The Cats Protection League` and 'Waggy Tales`. It is easy to forget that our beloved domestic animals suffer at these times and it is only right that we should do our bit for these amazing organizations, and the animals they care for.

It is in times like this when communities need to pull together and make a positive action, so I urge not just AFCB supporters, but everyone in the community to make just a small gesture to this vital cause and show your support by bringing to the Notts County game on the 21st December, non-perishable items such as:

Christmas treats e.g. chocolates, cake

Long life fruit juices

Long life milk

Pasta/rice

Cereals

Tea

Coffee

Sugar

Tinned meat/fish

Tinned vegetables…

…as well as pet food for the cats and dogs who also need our support.

There will be representatives at the Ground that will collect the food and ensure that it reaches those who most need it.

I would also like to personally thank those of you who have continued to supply food since our last campaign. Your continued support has changed the lives of many needy people and it is that enduring spirit of charity that makes me so proud to be a part of AFC Bournemouth.

I look forward to reporting on another successful Food Bank initiative and thank you for your support thus far.

Warm Regards,

Adam Murry.
