AFCB v Macclesfield @ Moss Rose. Saturday 21st November 2009

I decided to remain a plastic last week, I really didn’t fancy a 550 mile round trip in the worst storm of the year. Can’t blame me really when you hear it took the team 7 hours to get there! By all accounts it was a good game and the boys played well, particularly Shwan. Granted there is some disappointment in not winning but a well earned point a long way from home is a decent result. We’re not going to win every game as much as we would love to, it has to be nigh on impossible but if we can keep to winning at home, drawing away and not losing then we will be there or there abouts come May. You have to laugh really at how things can change in footie, for the last 2 seasons we were rooted firmly in the bottom part of the table and a draw away from home would have been celebrated as if we had just won the world championship and a win – well you’d miss the next 3/4 defeats because you’d still be celebrating!! Roll forward to now and we have become so accustomed to sitting pretty at the top of the table that a decent away draw feels more like a loss when accompanied to us sliding into being just joint top, 2nd on goal difference. Footie fans fickle – never in a million! LOL As Stu said on skype it really is a measure of how far we have come as a club in the past 10 months. Joint top or not I am still very proud of Eddie, Jace and the boys and proud to be a Cherry.

UTCIAD

Our Opponents:

Macclesfield sit in 17th on 19 points. Not that the table position makes that much difference to be honest! They have managed draw in their last 2 league games, away at Aldershot (0-0) and home to Bradford (2-2). Their home record is pretty mixed with 2 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats. It’s another long trip for us, around 500 miles round trip so we can expect another hard fought game.

Player to watch: Reneil “Ricky” Sappleton

Of course if our opponents have a Jamaica player in their squad I am going to choose them to feature, I am predictable and consistent at least!! At least this one also has a link with us albeit as a short term loanee!

Prior to joining Leicester City, Sappleton had a trial with Liverpool, and also joined Middlesbrough on a two week trial. He made his senior debut in a 2-1 home defeat to Southampton on 1 December.
On 12 August 2008, Sappleton joined Bournemouth on loan for a month, scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw against Aldershot Town on 16 August. He secured a second loan move that season, joining Oxford United for a month on New Year's Eve. He again scored on his debut and made an assist in a 2–0 home win over Salisbury City on 1 January 2009. In March 2009 Sappleton joined Conference North club AFC Telford until the end of the season where his performances did not warrant any further interest from the midlands club.

On 28 August 2009, Sappleton again moved, this time joining Macclesfield Town on loan until January 2010. He Scored his first goal in the away defeat at Crewe, his second coming a week later in front of the home fans in the 1-1 draw with Barnet and has 4 goals so far. He was included in the Jamaica squad during the CONCACAF U-20 Final Round in 2009, mainly due to a strong performance in two friendlies versus Canada U20s in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, even though he lacked match fitness.

Cherries News:

Not a lot going on off the field this week – just a minor detail in that the HMRC legacy debt is paid off in full and the winding up order dismissed Well done to Eddie, Adam, Jeff, Steve and Neill for all your hard work and thank you for doing what you promised you would. Next up the rent arrears and then we can work on getting the embargo lifted. At the rate they are going we will be debt free by the end of January!

In commercial news this week there is a lot going on at the club with various Christmas functions going on, the Geoff Hurst sportmans dinner, the supporters Christmas party (pm me or Stu if you’d like to book a place on the court offside table) and the spectacular Christmas draw. Now for that one if anyone finds out who to bribe for the 3rd prize, let me know, I could do with a decent laptop

Cherries Charity:

The excellent Julia’s House initiative continues to run in the background. I will endeavour to speak to Adam Murry in the next few days and get an update on how that one is going. I am going to take the opportunity to also remind everyone that we still have 2 collection bins located at the club for the foodbank, they are located in the entrance by the community sports trust office and in the club shop. A timely reminder that with Christmas fast approaching there will be those unable to afford to put food on the table, if you can help with either initiative it would be greatly appreciated.

Our player to watch:

Well as a follow up to Eddie last week I am going for his sidekick the wonderful Jason Tindall this week. Jace is much loved in the bmb household but I do have to feel a bit sorry for him as Lewis has the major hots for his daughter! Fair play to Jace though, every week he cheerfully throws a bunch of weeds/wet leaves/clumps of mud into his car without so much as batting an eyelid because Lewis has picked “flowers” for his daughter. It’s rather sweet really but I can only assume he leaves the cleaning of the car to his missus!

Jason rejoined the club 14 months ago as assistant to Jimmy Quinn after leaving two years previously, for non league neighbours Weymouth. When JQ was sacked on News Year Eve, Jace was kept on although his role at the time was not really defined. He didn’t remain in limbo for long as good friend Eddie Howe asked him to become his number 2 and so started a beautiful partnership. He made a surprise return to first team football as a substitute at Dagenham & Redbridge where he played his part in the 1-0 win. He had re-registered as a player to help out with the injury crisis at the time and his this time round debut came 3 years after he had last kicked a ball for us. Jason has made 2 appearances this season, both in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Yeovil and Northampton. A move I hasten to add that did not go down well with Tndall Junior, his poor daughter got most upset during the Yeovil game at seeing daddy out on the pitch bless her!

Right back in the day Jace started out as an apprentice at Charlton Athletic, but was released and joined Bournemouth on a free transfer in 1998 as a midfielder, becoming a regular in the side after being switched to central defence when Sean O'Driscoll replaced Lord Melvyn as manager. On 24 April 2004, in a 1-0 win at Peterborough United F.C., Jace made his last appearance for the Cherries for 18 months, when a knee injury recurred. After missing the entire 2004/5 season, he resorted to surgery in the United States at his own expense with specialist surgeon Dr Richard Steadman, returning to action on 2 January 2006 as an 86th minute substitute in the Cherries 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe United F.C. at Dean Court.

Released by Bournemouth in the summer of 2006, after a trial at Wycombe Wanderers, Jace joined local side Weymouth as a utility player, before being appointed as player-manager of Weymouth in January 2007. He chose another firm bmb favourite, Sir M, as his number 2. He was sacked a year later and finally returned to DC on 2 September 2008 as assistant manager to Jimmy Quinn. He and Eddie work well together, they seem to know each other inside out and are very close and supportive of each other making them a strong unit. Jace will appear in the AFCB history books alongside Eddie and deservedly so.

Oh and Happy birthday to Jace for last Sunday!

Head to Head:

Over the years we have met the silkmen a mere 6 times. The results are Bournemouth wins: 3, Draws: 2 and Macclesfield win: 1.

In terms of our opponents on the day they are relative unknown’s to us really. We played them in the league last season, with each team winning the respective away tie. Bradders scoring a brace in the 2-0 win at Moss Rose.

Prior to that we met them in the league in 2002/2003 when we drew at home and won away. (Jace played and Sir M got booked in that one!) and again in 1998/1999 when we won at home and drew away. Eddie played in both games and Jace in 1 of them.

Just goes to show the level of loyalty at our club when several of the personnel involved in the games of 98/99 are still here in some capacity…

Ref watch:

The ref for the game is Mr Trevor Kettle from Rutland, with Andy Hendley (West Midlands) and Jason Tyas (West Yorkshire) acting as his assistants. The Fourth Official is Paul Hodskinson from Lancashire.

Air Traffic Controller, married with three children he started refereeing in 1983, reaching the National List of assistant referees in 1998, was a SG assistant for a further four years until his promotion to the National List of Referees in 2003. Major appointments as an assistant referee were FA Trophy and FL Play Off Final in 2001, and Worthington Cup Final and Community Shield in 2002.4th Official at the League One Play Off Final in 2007.

NO, NO, NO!!!! Move over Jarnail Singh and Keith Hill, there is another muppet in town BMB is a very unhappy chapess this week seeing this appointment. Now if I was some sort of cynic I would say that the FL do this deliberately, every time we get good news off the pitch they ruin it for us by appointing us the worst of the worst in terms of referees… Course it could be argued that about 90% of the current mob on the national group are rated in the worst of the worst but even so!!

In 12 games so far this season he has dished out 36 yellows. A bit down on last years 100 yellows and 10 red in 34 games! According to soccerbase we’ve not been lumbered with him since 16.09.06 in the 0-0 draw with Brentford but I swear it hasn’t been that long - perhaps he officiated in a JPT game or pre-season friendly, soccerbase doesn’t list those, either that or the scars run very deep! On that day he booked Jo Kuffor and Leon Best. Prior to that it was December 2005 for the 2-1 loss at Southend, he booked Stock that day. He went onto my hate list in 2004 after the 5-1 thumping by Tranmere. The battle of Lewis’s godfathers ended up with Feeno getting booked for us and Pauly scoring for them! Not a good day that one!!

Match Prediction:

The bookies have Macclesfield as 5/2 to win, 23/10 for a draw and 11/10 for an AFCB win.

Next fixture:

Tuesday 24th November v Dagenham and Redbridge in a top of the table 6 pointer @ DC in the league. Kick off 7.45pm. I’ll add in directions to the preview for that game as it’s so long since we have all made the trek to DC
